Fall Quarter 2020

Hello Parents, Families, and Friends,

As students begin the final stretch of the fall quarter and winter break is fast approaching, it is important that we provide you with some key information. Finals are around the corner and soon your student may be home for the holidays.

Winter Break

On-campus housing will remain open during winter break at no additional cost for students who are unable to return home due to various reasons. One market and dining location will remain open to provide support. Students can continue their in-person courses, research and activities after winter break as before.

Dining Hours of Operation for Winter Break

Café Ventanas
Dec 20-23: 12-8 p.m.
Dec 24-25: 12-6 p.m.
Dec 26-30: 12-8 p.m.
Dec 31-Jan 1: 12-6 p.m.
Jan 2: 12-8 p.m.

Seventh Market
Dec 20-Jan 2: 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

All market and dining locations will resume fall quarter operating hours on Jan. 3.

Students who remain on campus but leave for a meal or other recreational activities with others where they have to remove their face covering will need to sequester and resume wearing a face covering in their residential unit for 14 days, with testing on Days 1, 5 and 10.

Winter Quarter Billing Statement

The Winter Quarter Billing Statement will be available on December 1 and must be paid no later than December 18, 2020. Please take a moment to review the billing statement at before December 1 to be sure your student’s Fall Quarter charges are paid in full—students with “old debt” will be assessed an MDET HOLD which will prohibit any Aid/Loans and personal payments to pay Winter Charges. Please reach out (or have your student reach out) before finals in December to offices that may offer assistance/advice/recommendations to help ensure old debts are cleared. Offices that may be able to help: Financial Aid, SFS, Housing, Cashiers Office. Winter Classes will be dropped if tuition is not paid by January 4.

California COVID Notify Pilot Program is one of the key tools to fight COVID-19 and slow its spread on campus and in the community. CA COVID Notify, published by the State of California, uses the Exposure Notifications System from Google and Apple to alert you when you’ve been exposed to COVID-19. It will quickly notify you if you’ve likely been exposed, allowing you to seek medical attention and reduce risk for your loved ones. Additional information about the program and instructions on how to download the app can be found here.

Student Wellness

As finals approach, chances are your college student is experiencing stress. The Zone is a student lounge that offers free well-being programs such as yoga, fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, meditation, and much more — all designed to help your student de-stress. UC San Diego also offers numerous tutoring and study assistance programs most of them free of charge, which can also help minimize your student's stress level.

Warn Your Students Against Scams:

We encourage you to speak with your student regarding potential scams and how to avoid them. We recommend that you only use University approved payment options when paying your student’s university bill. Be wary of third party companies claiming to make a payment to the university for you. For more information regarding approved payment options, please visit

Living in an increasingly connected world means students have greater access to information regarding potential schools, employment opportunities and their peers. However, the same can be said of the student.  Warn your student about when it is appropriate to provide personal information and when it is not (through social media, phone calls, or email).  If information is being requested from them, encourage them to always go directly to the source and to not click on any links from an email address they are not familiar with.

Parent and Family Programs

We understand the impact families have on their student’s success. We are committed to nurturing the relationship between families, students, and the university. A dedicated web page with a variety of resources can be found here.
