Get Creative! What You Can Do

Housing • Dining • Hospitality wanted to involve the city of San Diego in this project and found a partner with the Design Institute San Diego.

It was a great opportunity for their young interior design students to gain real life experience in outfitting a typical student unit.

Using the TV show “Design on a Dime” as a model, each team was told they had a specific budget and timeline to outfit a unit---they can’t paint or otherwise change existing unit and have to use provided furnishings but otherwise, it’s all on them.

Six teams of students developed their unique concept and presented to a panel of HDH staff for selection. All six were so enthusiastic, HDH decided to award each of them a unit!

The resulting designs were revealed at a VIP opening night event, followed by two days of sold-out tours for the campus community.

The votes tallied recognized Room 1 as the winner. Congrats!
