What We Do
Items listed are new as of the 2008/09 academic year. For a complete list, download the What We Do PDF.
Housing
- HDH welcomes Sustainability Manager Krista Mays; she will coordinate the efforts in the department and act as liaison with green campus groups.
- In October ‘08, HDH launched a new Green Grants for 08-09 where UC San Diego residents and HDH staff can request reimbursement for specific sustainable Housing or Dining projects.
- New Administrative Office Policies: HDH will implement a set of workstation standards that reduce energy use by at least 5% annually. Offices will power down desktop computers and printers nightly, use power strips, use recycling bins, purchase of energy star products, establish criteria to justify multiple computer monitors, replace old computers with new energy-efficient models, review the use of individual printers and swap Inkjet for LaserJet, and continually indentify all opportunities to reduce and eliminate.
- Custodial operations has invested in new equipment for cleaning floors, which improves air quality by sucking moisture away from carpets, increases safety due to its 100% water pickup, doesn’t wear down carpet and flooring as quickly as a vacuum, reduces environmental impact with its detergent dispensing system, and reduces waste-stream contribution.
- Each apartment resident receives a reusable recycling bag so that recyclables can be collected in your apartment, and taken to the dumpsters located near the residence halls.
Dining
- Provide FREE 32 oz. resuable beverage bottles to incoming residents... use this bottle for a discount every time you fill up in Dining Services!
- Serve only Fair Trade Certified coffee, tea, and sugar at all HDH locations. Also promise at least one Fair Trade option for chocolates.
- Offer only Certified Humane Cage-Free Eggs at all HDH Dining Locations and Place & Markets
- Provide biodegradeable "to-go" cups and utensils in our restaurants. We've also eliminated plastic utensils and replaced them with re-usable flatware.
- Toby’s Spot: a re-use effort between Dining and Housing. Take your meals to-go on permanent dishware, and when you’re done leave them at Toby’s Spot, located in each ResHall or apartment ground floor elevator area. Dining staff picks up the dirty dishes. Nothing to throw away, and just as easy as using plastic!
- Phased out plastic bags in all Dining and Retail locations.
- Dining has a contract with New Leaf Bio for the pick up of used cooking oil, to be refined into bio fuel.
- Partnering with UC San Diego’s Green Campus to complete a Facility Energy Assessment of all residential dining units.
Construction/Purchasing
- HDH will pursue LEED Certified Silver Rating as the minimum level for new facilities; LEED EB Certified Silver Rating as the minimum level for existing building renovations; and will include Sustainability elements for all non-bid contracts.
- The University of California uses environmental sustainability as a key criterion in evaluating suppliers. HDH works with campus Purchasing to reduce vendors and/or buy from local vendors whenever possible, lessening energy consumption and emissions.
- Reviews and implements drought-tolerant landscaping options.
- Transitioning to eco-friendly Forbo Linoleum in ARCH apartments / researching use of eco-friendly bamboo flooring for hard surface areas.
- Used furniture is handed down to non-profit organizations and not placed in landfills. When possible, we recover and re-use.
